LAKE

Sligo town is bookended with water, the Atlantic to the West and Lough Gill to the East, with the Garavogue River linking the two.

Lough Gill is probably the most famous lake in the literary world, as it's the body of water that encompasses The Lake Isle of Innishfree.

The festival trails will see you view Lough Gill from a number of vantage points, all beautiful, some breathtaking.

MOUNTAIN

Sligo is surrounded by moutains; the majestic Benbulben to the North, the historic burial place of Queen Meabh to the East at Knocknarea, and the Ox Mountains to the South and West, there's endless mountain trails to be conquered.

The Sligo Trail Running Festival ramps up the experience factor by tackling Union Rock on the foothills of the Ox Mountains by night. Viewing the distant, twinkling lights of Collooney and the other towns below is your reward.

WOOD

Hazelwood, Slish Wood, Highwood, Glenwood, there's no end to forest trails to be discovered across Sligo. Each site offers its own unique experience and sights.

Megolythic tombs, cairns, stunning views and eye-catching geological features abound as you explore trails through Sligo's woodlands.

The trail running festival will introduce you to Union Wood as you make your way to the top of Union Rock.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

It's a trail running festival, so obviously, you'll need running shoes, ideally running shoes designed to deliver you comfortably across the variety of trail that features during the festival. Expect, woodland, beach, dune, hill and mountain tracks.

As trail running grows in popularity, more products and activity specific apparel is coming online. RUNPOD is the Northwest's specialist running store, stocking a range of trail running footwear. Check out their website or call in to the store on Markievicz Road, Sligo. They also offer a professional grade biomechaical assessment.

None of the scheduled runs across the festival schedule are excessively long, however, everyone needs to have a means of carrying water during each trail run.
